Synopsis of Content:

These two internet entrepreneurs wrote a book by only writing a bit of it. They solicited articles from various other internet marketers and then assembled them all together in a single book. The book contains 44 chapters, some only two or three pages in length, others longer. Of these Vitale and Mok only wrote or co-wrote 10. The other 34 were submitted by others.

The book focuses on various internet marketing strategies. For the person new to internet marketing the book is a great introduction to many ideas that for the most part have been around for awhile. A couple articles are actually a bit dated. A few things are really fresh.

The authors in part use the very book they are writing as a big lesson on how to collaborate with others to quickly create a useful information product to sell. They therefore "wrote" the book in a few hours. In reality they are more editors and compilers than authors and this is not a new concept in the publishing world.

The book ends with a self styled "bonus" set of chapters by marketer Terry Dean. These may be the most valuable part of the book.

Unless you are a highly experienced internet marketer you will learn a lot reading through these articles even though you may find some of the materials on newspaper advertising of little use.

Readability/Writing Quality:

Over all the book is well done. It is easy to read. Most of the chapters are short and to the point. They use lots of lists and sub-headings to keep you organized.

Joe Vitale has been around for a long time as a copy writer and marketer. He was a featured "teacher" in the movie and book called The Secret. Mok is a student of Vitale and now a business partner.

Three Great Ideas You Can Use:

1. You can work with others on an internet project, thereby reducing the workload of each participant and pooling talent and information to provide a better and more marketable product. This is the chief lesson from this book - the value of collaboration and joint ventures.

2. Terry Dean's articles on affiliate marketing at the end of this book are great. You can learn a lot of basic affiliate marketing information from these chapters.

3. Buried on page 28 is a truth that I tell people all the time about books - "never, ever just read a book. Use it!" This is so true. If people followed this one instruction from this book they would reap more than the book cost them.
There is a lot in this book. Most of it is useful, some of it is great. It is really difficult to reduce it to just one list of 3.

Is Butterfly Marketing a Scam?

Today I just wanted to quickly comment about Butterfly Marketing 2.0. A scam? This is Mike Filsaime's "relaunch" of his popular selling product that he released about two years ago. It originally sold for, and has until now, $1997. Many people, included many of the "gurus" have purchased this product for the two grand. Mike, recently put this entire product on disc and paper and offered it for for $29.95, "the cost of shipping". The only criteria being that you had to try his newsletter for a month. If you don't cancel his newsletter before 30 days passes, you will be billed $39.95 per month recurring for it.

Now on the surface this looks to be pretty straight forward, but I have a couple of problems with the ethics behind what he did. First of all, I have personally had a VERY difficult time in the past trying to cancel another product of his, before it went to recurring payments (also for his newsletter).

I did order Butterfly Marketing this time and while he does a better job of spelling out how to cancel, I find it funny and frustrating that on the cancelme.com page my subscription doesn't show up after entering my info, even though it shows my name and knows I have an account. It just won't show my subscription, thus allowing me to cancel. So, I'm going to have to find a toll number to call to cancel in the next week or so. This may not seem like a big thing but it's part of the profile that he has created by making it difficult for people to cancel his products, thus ensuring a few more payments are made to him, which he of course won't refund, because you read the disclosure.

So, back to Butterfly Marketing 2.0..... I have just recently received it and although I did not order the original version, I have found that I have an identical digital version on my computer. From where, I do not know. I compared what I have to what I received in the mail and they are identical, except Mike has updated his picture that goes above his signature. I have read through about a quarter of the 124 pages and can verify that it is the same as what I already had. In addition to this, I received 10 discs. They are mostly interviews that Mike has done with people pertaining to the 'Butterfly Effect' of this type of marketing.

So I won't pretend to give you anymore of a review of the product other than to reiterate that it seems to just be an identical relaunch of his previous product, but used in a way to get people to sign up for his $40 per month newsletter.

As to my other issue with the ethics behind this. I have seen and heard Mike praise and moan and pat himself on the back for the "gamble" that he is taking by "giving away" this information. He had video of himself just talking about what a sacrifice he is making and that he is spending $17 per package for a total of 10,000 packages. Then he talks about the almost $200,000 of his own money that he is willing to sacrifice for this and all that he asks for is us to pay the $29.95 cost of shipping.

C'mon! Does he seriously think that everyone will believe this sob story? The facts are that he may very well have spent $17 per product to get ready and package. That, I believe includes the cost of putting them into the flat rate USPS box that they get shipped in. This flat rate box doesn't cost anymore than $12.95 to ship, if that much. So there is already a profit of, 29.95-12.95=hmmmm, that's funny, it equals $17 which is his stated cost to produce it and get it ready for shipping!!

So, this whole sob story really is a break-even story at worst, not a loss for him. In the end he WILL get more subscribers for his newsletter and he WILL get some people to pay him that had wanted to cancel but forgot or couldn't figure out how. This is a profit center for him and a way to create future payments, build his list and create continuity programs.

Now, I think really it's a good plan by him for his business, but I don't like, as mentioned, some of his tactics used in implementing it. Making it hard to cancel, bemoaning his potential financial losses and completely misrepresenting his shipping costs are ethical issues that I do not condone.

I have reason to believe that Butterfly Marketing is a fine product, but I hope people weren't convinced to order it because of the above issues.

Get Listed in The Major Directories

There are two popular directories you will definitely want your website listed in: Yahoo and The Open Directory (DMOZ).

You won't get a lot of traffic from the actual directory listing BUT having a link from these quality directories may actually boost your exposure in Google, MSN and Yahoo's regular search.

Why? Because many search engines are now looking at who is linking to your site in order to determine your rank for certain keywords. So if they see you are linked from Yahoo's directory or the Open Directory they may view your site as the "authority" on the subject and rank you higher.

Yahoo
Yahoo has a regular search function and a directory. The regular search engine, which is used the most by web surfers, is free to get into. All you have to do is be linked from other websites that are already included in their index and Yahoo's search will pick you up eventually.

However, if you want to get into the directory, you'll more than likely have to pay.

Even though the $299/year ($600 for adult sites) fee is for commercial sites, many non-commercial sites that really want to get in the directory end up paying because Yahoo can't normally read all the free submissions. They receive thousands upon thousands everyday and it's just impossible for them to get to them all.

I haven't heard of anyone getting into the directory for free since 1999 or 2000. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's very unlikely the free submission will get you listed.

It’s important to note that paying the fee does not guarantee your site will get listed. It only guarantees it will be reviewed in a timely fashion.

Also keep in mind that you do not get your money back if your site is declined. You do, however, get 30 days to appeal your listing. But the majority of the sites submitted this way do get approved. I would presume this is mainly because people are not going to pay $300 to submit a sloppy site so they make sure their site is polished and ready to go prior to submitting.

Another thing to remember is that Yahoo does not give priority listings or special treatment to people who pay the fee. Yahoo claims that your site will be treated just like any other site once it’s listed. This listing will NOT boost your ranking in their regular search results.

Again, the main benefit of a Yahoo directory listing is not the traffic but to have a link from a high-quality directory that may give your site credibility in the eyes of other search engines like Google or MSN. Google places big emphasis on who is linking to you.

How to Submit to Yahoo
First, choose the appropriate category.

Go to Yahoo.com and click on the directory categories until you drill down to the appropriate one for your site.

If you are not sure if you are in the appropriate category, do a search for your major keywords and look at the web sites that come up. Click on the category and then scroll to the bottom of the page.

Remember if your site is commercial then you will be submitting to the Business & Economy or Shopping section. Don’t try to submit a commercial site to a noncommercial directory to avoid paying the fee. It won’t work.

Once you’ve gotten to the appropriate category, scroll down to the bottom of the page and choose "Suggest a Site". If you do not see this link then you have not drilled down deep enough into the sub categories.

If your site is commercial then you must use the Business Express submission that costs you $300/year, but if your site is noncommercial you can choose if you want to use the Business Express or Standard (free) submission.

Complete the submission form with the following in mind:

Be sure you are submitting to the appropriate category or Yahoo will put your site in the most appropriate one. Some believe that if your category suggestion is way off, your submission will be ignored.
Make sure the title you choose is the actual title of your site or Yahoo will change it.
Keep your description under 15 words if possible.
Make sure your description is editorial in nature and not promotional. Stay away from phrases like "the best marketing site on the net". Also make sure your description accurately describes what your site is about or Yahoo will change your description! Check the description for sites that are already in the directory to get an idea of what Yahoo is looking for
If you’re using the Standard (free) submission, wait at least 8 weeks to see if your site gets listed. Do not keep bombarding submissions to Yahoo. That’s a sure way to get ignored for good! If you are not listed in 8 weeks go back and make sure you submitted to the most appropriate category. Then check your site to see what you could improve. Also, look at other sites in your category and see what you may be missing. Do you have enough unique content? Did you check for typos? Is your layout consistent?
The Open Directory Project (A.K.A. DMOZ)
This is another major directory that you may want to submit to. The Open Directory Project, http://www.dmoz.org (acronym for Directory Mozilla) is developed and managed by everyday people who are experts in their areas of interest.

Unlike Yahoo, their entire directory is maintained by volunteers.

As of right now, it’s absolutely free to get your site listed here, but just like Yahoo, they do not accept all sites. However, they have been known to be a bit easier to get into than Yahoo. Of course, you should still be sure your site is polished before suggesting it.

The ODP powers directory services for some the most popular portals and search engines on the web, including the ever-popular Google. If you can get listed in the ODP, you'll eventually wind up in the Google search engine.

How Do I Submit to ODP?
Their submission process is very similar to Yahoo’s. First you need to go to the site and find your appropriate category. Then drill down until you find the best subcategory. Once you find the one you think your site belongs in, click the "Add URL" link in the top right hand corner of the screen and follow the directions.

Again, make sure that the title and description accurately describe your site. Don’t try anything fancy or your site might be left out in the cold.

One feature I do like about ODP is that you can contact the category editors if you have a question. For example, once I had a site that I submitted and it was never listed so I asked one of the editors and they told me that the content on my site was too much like a site that was already listed. So I went back and revamped my site a bit, resubmitted, and was accepted the second time.

Whatever you do, do NOT bombard the directory with submissions or you’ll be ignored quicker than you can say "ODP". If your site is not listed, simply ask the editor of your subcategory (editors are normally listed at the bottom of the page).

I’ve found that it can take anywhere from two days to one year to get your site listed here. Please be patient when submitting. If you do not get in the first time, email the editor of that category.

If the editor does not respond, go back and check your site again. See if there is anything you could tidy up (spelling errors, layout, etc.) then try again.

Also make sure you are submitting to the most appropriate category for your site. Unfortunately, not all editors will respond but occasionally you'll find one that is polite enough to offer you suggestions for getting listed.
